Guest Blog: How EFT Can Support & Change Feelings of Stress

Stress seems to have become an accepted part of life. When things are tough, you battle through the days, fall into bed, worn out and tense, having not had time for yourself, or feeling that you haven’t achieved anything at all. It can feel like Groundhog Day - particularly through the pandemic when there was no opportunity to break the cycle with a holiday or a visit out somewhere.

There is a way to change. There are techniques that you can use, whenever you need them, to change the way you feel and EFT is one such tool.

Emotional Freedom Technique

EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) aka ‘tapping’ is simply brilliant when is comes to reducing stress. It’s been described as ‘acupuncture without the needles’ and is a process of gently tapping on specific points on the head and hands to move energy, pain, emotions and sensations through and out of the body.

My life was once ruled by anxiety. I was ‘high functioning’ but felt I was on high alert the whole time and cried every day. I tried many, many different things to help myself, including taking beta blockers and anti-depressants for 18 months. I had 12 years of counselling and would still have panic attacks and crippling social anxiety.

Lots of things did help, but nothing transformed my life like EFT and Matrix Reimprinting (a specific EFT Technique). For the first time in my life, I felt I had a way to feel free and that life could be different.”

Your emotions want to be acknowledged. They are trying to help you by sending messages from your unconscious mind, which is constantly reading the environment. It perceives a ‘danger’ - such as a sound, a movement, or maybe a demanding email or a negative thought - this activates the Fight or Flight response which sends a feeling of stress through the body to motivate you to get out of danger.

Add in daily triggers of time/work/family pressures, negative self-talk and anything else that doesn’t feel good and the stress ramps up, with nowhere to go.

When you start tapping regularly, you reduce stress in the body. You can spot your triggers, unpick them and the underlying traumas that created them.

You can heal and you can change.

Understanding the EFT Process

The process itself is very simple, once you’ve learned the points to tap, you’re basically good to go. You focus on what you want to clear - eg. tension in your shoulders, describe what it feels like and then tap through the points as you maintain that focus.

The tension starts to release. You feel relief, you might sigh, yawn, cry or want to stretch - all signs of an energetic shift in your body. You keep tapping, checking on the feeling, repeating the process until it’s cleared.

Like anything else, EFT only works when you use it! It can take a bit of getting used to - it’s akin to learning a new language - once you start tapping you will wonder how you ever lived without it!
